Academy ran out 7 - 1 winners today against Rothes and shook off the disappointment of last weekends defeat to local rivals Brora. Martin Gunn was suspended for the game, but new signing Sam Mackay started the game and was influential in the result, scoring a hat-trick on his full debut.

Academy started the game playing up the Harmsworth slope with quite a strong blustery wind behind them. Mackay opened the scoring with only 8 minutes on the clock. He was played into the box by Stevie Cunningham and had a simple tap home past keeper Ridgers right hand from only 4 yards out.

1 - 0

Just 3 minutes later David Alan did well to win a corner on the right. It was whipped into the box by Richard Macadie and fell to Alex Lamb. His first shot was blocked, but at the second attempt he fired a right foot rocket shot past keeper Ridgers and into the left hand corner of his net.

2 - 0

On the quarter hour good link up play between Grant Campbell and Stevie Cunningham gave Academy their next sniff at goal, but Cunningham's attempt went just inches wide of the Rothes right hand post.

Alex Lamb was booked in the 20th minute for clocking up one tough challenge too many for the liking of referee Sim.

In 20 minutes Gary Manson played a long ball from defence and David Allan was sent free clean through on goal one-on-on with keeper Ridgers. Allan  went to go round him and Ridgers made slight contact and Allan went over in the box. Referee Sim pointed straight to the spot and sent Ridgers off with a straight red card, adjudged to be the last man and denying a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Forward Iain MacRae was taken off for substitute keeper Stephen Dunn, and his first job of the game was to pick the ball out of the back of the net as Macadie stroked the penalty kick past him to put the Scorries into a commanding 3 goal lead, and Rothes in deep trouble down to 10 men.

 3 - 0

Rothes to give them their due kept their heads up and won two concequtive corners. The second of which was headed home by Mark Smith in the 29th minute as he got his head to the ball before Michael Gray who had come out to try to punch clear.

3 - 1

31 minutes Ashley Grant was booked for a tackle through the back of Sam Mackay.

A close call in the 33rd minute for Academy as Rothes had the ball in the net again, but it was chalked off for off-side.

3 minutes before the half time break David Alan was again released out of defence and got round the keeper and slotted home but referee Sim deemed Allan to have controlled the ball with a hand and he was booked for it.

In the last action of the first half Academy came close to increasing their lead. Macadie and McKiddie linked well up the left wing and Macadie's cross into the box took a flick off the head of Mark Hector and smacked the outside of the Rothes right hand post before going for a corner.

Half time 3 - 1

It took 8 minutes of the second half before Academy threatened the Rothes goal. Macadie fired a corner in from the left to the near post where Stewart Ross got a foot in to flick it towards goal, but substitute keeper Dunn made a smart save with his feet.

Rothes almost pulled back another when Ashley Grant had a great attempt from the corner of the box that beat Gray past his left hand and smashed back off the post.

Rothes made a substitution in 59 minutes Ashley Young for Kris Duncan.

Academy were playing some sweet football by this stage and McKiddie played a neat pass to Macadie into the box, but Macadie sent his effort past the Rothes left hand post from a tight angle.

Craig Shearer put the game beyond doubt in the 64th minute when the ball broke for him in the Rothes box from a Macadie pass and he hammered home from 6 yards out with his right foot.

4 - 1

David Allan almost increased the Scorries lead straight from the kick-off as he got free in the box and his shot hit a defender, bounced off substitute keeper Dunn and was then humped out of the danger area with the Rothes defence at sixes and sevens.

Academy made their first changes of the game with 67 minutes played. Stevie Cunningham and Bryan McKiddie were replaced for Gary Weir and Alan Farquhar.

Academy went nap with 71 minutes on the clock. Ross pinged a diagonal ball out to the left flank over the top of the Rothes defence to Gary Weir. He took a touch to control it and then slid the ball inside the box to Richard Macadie and he put his lacers through the ball sending it flashing past keeper Dunn.

5 - 1

More to come for Academy in the 75th minute with a great flowing move and the best goal of the game. Michael Gray threw the ball out to Grant Campbell who pushed it forward to Gary Manson. He carried it forward drawing in the Rothes mid-field before sliding to Alan Farquhar who played an inch perfect pass to Richard Macadie. Macadie split the Rothes back line with a first time pass for Sam Mackay who touched it round keeper Dunn and then stuck it home for his second of the game.

6 - 1

Academy made their final change in the 76th minute with Ross Allan coming on for Stevie Cunningham

In 81 minutes Donald Horsbourgh was booked for sliding through Stewart Ross in the Academy box in a rare Rothes attack as they started to run out of steam having played a lot of the game with a man short.

The Allan brothers almost combined to good effect. David Allan stormed down the right wing and squared for Ross but his first time effort was cleared off the line by keeper Dunn.

As Sam Mackay was being announced as the match sponsors man of the match he bagged his hat-trick. Gary Weir flicked the ball over the top of the Rothes defence to him and he strolled into the box, picked his spot and hammered the ball into the left hand corner.

7 - 1

Michael Gray made a good save in the last seconds turning a drive from substitute Kris Duncan around the post for a corner, but Academy had played a near-perfect game, really made the extra man count today and ran out comfortable winners.
