Academy marched into the second round of the Scottish Cup after a 9-1 demolition job on East of Scotland opponents Coldstream. Gary Weir and Stevie Cunningham both bagged hat-tricks, the first time since joining the league that we've had two players with a hat-trick in a single game. The 9 goal haul was also a record total in competitive games for the Scorries.

A bumper crowd filled Harmsworth Park on a glorious sunny day and they were cheering as early as the 5th minute when Davie Allan had the ball in the net but he was ruled off-side.

Minutes later Weir slipped the ball to Cunningham in the middle of the box but Paul Cowe nicked the ball off Cunningham's toes just as he was going to pull the trigger.

In the 17th minute Academy won a corner. Macadie whipped the ball over and Shearer climbed and got a good head to the ball but his effort clipped off the top of the Coldstream crossbar.

Academy were looking comfortable at this stage of the game and had several further chances in a 3 minute period of play. The Streamer's keeper Mark Walters parried out a Macadie shot and Cunningham fired the follow-up high over the target. Martin Gunn couldn't then keep an attempt down and it too went over the top of target, and that was followed by Allan being slipped in by Weir but Walters was sharp off his line and was first to the ball to clear the danger.

Academy were given a fright in the 27th minute when Coldstream front man John Crawford showed good strength to fend off Grant Steven as he muscled his way through the middle of the Academy defence and he lobbed Allan Bokas. His attempt bounce off the underside of the Crossbar and bounced down. The visitors looked to have a fair shout for the ball crossing the line, but referee Baxter waved away their protests.

The play broke straight back up the park and Allan squared the ball to Weir but his shot was blocked by Walters, and Cunningham's follow-up shot was also blocked as it smacked off a Coldstream defender.

Academy opened the scoring in the 28th minute. Allan played the ball up the flank to Weir and he broke into the Coldstream box before sliding it across goal to Macadie and he tapped in from close range.

1 - 0

3 minutes later the Scorries doubled their advantage. Good close passing in the Coldstream box saw Cunningham put the ball to the feet of Allan and he turned on a sixpence and smashed a right foot shot into the goal.

2 - 0

Coldstream got right back into the game in the 37th minute. Slack play in the Academy defence gave possession to the visitors and Michael Allan ran onto the ball and smacked it on the half volley from 25 yards out and his effort flew past Bokas into his top left hand corner.

Half time 2 - 1

4 minutes after the restart Academy had a great chance to increase their lead when Gary Manson had his shot blocked off the line but Michael Steven followed up and looked as if he was going to get his name on the score card but he held his head in his hands as keeper Walters blocked his attempt with his feet.

Academy scored their 3rd in the 54th minute. Weir sent a neat flick into the path of Allan and he raced into the box with ball at feet. Walters came to meet him and went to ground to try go grab the ball off Allan's boots and referee Baxter pointed to the spot as Allan fell to the ground. Weir stepped up and took the spot kick which he fired into the right hand corner of the goal.

3 - 1

Shearer shot just wide of target in the next attack and Coldstream then had a great chance to claw a goal back. Crawford broke the off-side trap and marched towards goal going one-on-one with Bokas. Unfortunately for the visitors his lobbed attempt at goal went just over the top of the cross-bar.

The game was providing plenty of goal attempt action and Cunningham sent Weir in on target again but Weir seemed to get his feet caught under himself and couldn't reach the ball.

Allan was proving to be a real handful for the Coldstream defence and he again hit the boost button and surged up the right flank to the by-line before sliding the ball across goal for Shearer who side footed into the net.

4 - 1

Academy were then awarded another penalty when Cunningham past the ball into the box to the feet of Allan and in a repeat of the first penalty Walters took man and ball and Baxter pointed to the spot. Weir took the spot-kick and sent the ball again to the right of Walters but this time the visitor's keeper got a good hand to the ball and pushed it wide of his post for a corner.

Academy went nap in the 65th minute. Weir played a pass into Cunningham and he took his time and committed keeper Walters to go to ground before he dinked the ball over him for a neat finish.

5 - 1

By the stage of the match Academy looked to be the fitter of the sides and Cunningham again got in on the action as he latched onto a Allan pass and he took the ball around keeper Walters and tapped home into an empty net.

6 - 1

Keeper Walters pulled off another great save to deny Allan and Weir sliced an attempt just wide of the post before Cunningham notched up his hat-trick. Weir weaved into the box and was pushed wide by keeper Walters. The chance looked to be lost but Weir kept his cool and pushed the ball through the smallest of gaps to the feet of Cunningham and he had the simplest of finishes.

7 - 1

2 minutes later Academy were coasting when Macadie picked a high ball out of the sky and laid it off to Weir and he slammed home with a great finish from the edge of the box.

8 - 1

Substitute Stewart Ross almost added another but his header was cleared off the line from a corner kick but Academy notched up their record 9th goal when Weir found a half yard of space inside the Coldstream box and he turned on the ball and curled a right foot shot past an outstretched Walters and into the bottom right hand corner of his net to complete his hat-trick.

9 - 1

Academy pushed to try to reach double figures. Manson floated a free-kick to the back post where Weir charged in and got a foot to the ball but Walters scrambled across his line and bundled the ball away for a corner, and in the last action of the game Macadie drove a good shot on target but Walters, who kept the total from being a cricket-score, tipped the effort over the top of his crossbar.
