Wick Academy move up one league place today, going above Brora, after beating Rothes by a single goal in a game full of incident and talking-points. Titchie was lone-manager as Zeeky was at a wedding. We also had 3 key players missing due to injury; Martin Gunn, Craig Shearer and Stuart Sinclair.
With 10 minutes gone Wick had a lucky escape when James More handled the ball outside of his box. To everyone’s amazement referee Duff awarded Rothes a free-kick, and More escaped without even a booking.
Shortly afterwards Wick were denied a stone-wall penalty after a Rothes defender handled the ball in the box.
Wicks best chance of the half fell to Gary Weir, who showed good skill lifting the ball over the Rothes keeper. The ball was parried back to him but unfortunately pulled his right foot shot wide of an empty net, when he really should have scored.
Wick also had a seemingly good goal chalked off for off-side. It came from a defensive mix-up in the Rothes box, when keeper Dunn’s kick-out hit the back of Nathan Sharp. The ball fell to Gary Manson, who squared to Shane Sutherland who slotted home, but referee Dunn gave the off-side decision.
Rothes finished the half the strongest, and forced several corners, James making a fantastic point-blank save from one of them to keep the game scoreless at half time.
Half Time 0 – 0
Wick started the second half with a blustery wind behind them and they scored their winner with just over a hour gone. Following a good break out of defence, Gary Weir had a shot on goal that came back off a defender, and Academy’s 16 year old striker Shane Sutherland picked up the re-bound and scored. The lines-man flagged for off-side, but referee Duff waved that aside and awarded the goal.
0 - 1
Referee Duff caused more controversy with 64 minutes gone, when he gave Shaun Sinclair a straight red card. It came from a tangle of bodies in the Academy box, and Grant Milne appeared to throw a punch at Sinclair.Words were exchanged between Sinclair and the referee, and Duff sent Sinclair off for foul and abusive language
Rothes pressured 10 man Academy right to the final whistle, but couldn’t find an equaliser, so Academy take all 3 point in a welcome away win.
