Academy won their 3rd league game on the spin today by beating Cove 1 – 0. Shane Sutherland grabbing the winner in the 35th minute.
Wick started the game playing down the Harmsworth Park slope, but it was Cove that settled first and probably shaded the first 15 minutes of play. The first chance of the game fell in the 3rd minute. Andrew MacLeod dithered on the ball and instead of clearing his lines gave away a corner kick. From the resulting corner Clark Bain screwed his shot wide of Mores right hand post.
A minute later and Cove threatened again. Craig McMillan was sent clear through the middle and he had a decent right foot shot that More got down well to save.
Cove’s next attempt came in the 7th minute. MacMillan again found himself through on goal. More came to meet him but the ball bounced past him and MacMillan steadied himself, collected the bouncing ball, but his shot on goal was cleared away by Gary Manson.
2 minutes later and it was John Bain that had a crack at goal. Bain did well to win the ball off MacLeod and he tried to chip More from about 30 yards out, but his attempt went just over the top of the Academy cross-bar.
Just before the quarter hour Academy had their first real venture into the Cove box. Martin Gunn crossed a good ball into the box from the right and Craig Shearer got his head to it, but it went over the top of Pirie’s cross-bar.
Academy then started to come into the game a bit better, and had a series of half-attempts in the space of a few minutes. Martin Gunn first having a real good crack at a 35 yard free-kick that Pirie got behind for a good save, and Shane Sutherland then just about got onto the end of a high bouncing ball in the box, but it just evaded him and the Cove defenders.
Cove were forced to make a change in the 28th minute with Cruickshank coming off injured. He was replaced by Jordan Reid.
With 35 minutes played 16 year old striker Shane Sutherland scored his 7th league goal of the season. Gary Weir played a great ball to send him clean through the middle, and Sutherland kept his cool to slot home past Pirie from 14 yards out with a classy finish.
1 – 0
5 minutes before the half time whistle and Sutherland found himself in an almost identical goal scoring position, this time played through by Richard Macadie. This time however Pirie got a hand to his shot and this kept Cove in the game.
Academy kept pushing, and great play between Weir and Sutherland once again saw them on the attack. Sutherland slid in a cross-goal ball and an onrushing David Cowie was just short on reaching it at the back post.
Half time 1 – 0
Wick started the second half where they left off the first, on the attack, and within 4 minutes Weir did well cutting in from the left and across the Cove back line. He made room to get a right foot shot off, but he sliced it just wide of goal.
This was followed by Cove forcing a corner kick, and the crossed ball was driven on goal by Clark Bain, with a good 25 yard drive, but More watched it all the way and collected comfortably into his mid-drift.
Cove’s keeper Pirie was called into action shortly afterward when Craig Shearer squared the ball for Martin Gunn and Gunn’s 20 yard shot was saved well by Pirie low down at his left hand post.
2 minutes later Academy had another chance to stretch their lead. David Cowie drove up the wing before crossing to Weir at the edge of the Cove box. Weir set the ball up for Shane Sutherland to have a crack, but his shot deflected off Grant Fraser for a corner kick.
Just over the hour mark Richard Macadie showed some great close control ball skills. He ran past 3 Cove defenders and from the edge of the box tried a delicate chip over the top of the advancing Pirie, but it was just too high and went over the top of goal.
Cove made a change with 20 minutes left taking on the very experienced Ian Stewart for Dean Lawrie, and Stewart was only on the pitch for a minute when he almost scored. He latched onto a cross in the heart of the Academy box and sent a looping shot over the top of More. More back-peddled and somehow managed to get his hands to the ball with a brilliant diving save to keep the Scorries slender lead intact.
Academy made late substitutes themselves, Gary Farquhar coming on for goal scorer Shane Sutherland, and Craig Shearer coming off injured for Stewart Ross.
In a tense finish for the Academy supporters it was Wick that almost provided the perfect finish, when in the dying seconds Gary Weir latched onto a ball in the box, hitting it on the half volley with good power, but keeper Pirie made a fantastic point-blank save.
Full time 1 – 0
So another win for Academy and this takes them to within 4 points of 10th place Rothes. This was Rothes last game today and they got beat by the Locos. Academy now has Brora at home next weekend in what is turning out to be a great series of end of season games.
