Match Report

A cold and windy day at Meadowbank stadium, but an estimated crowd of 300 has turned out, with a good part of that supporting the Academy. City are playing in their away strip of yellow tops and black shorts, Academy in their black and white, and before kick-off the players gathered around the centre circle to hold up red cards, as a part of the SFA's "Show racism the red card" campaign.

Academy are playing with the strong wind at their back for the first half, and have their first attempt at goal with 5 minutes on the clock. Martin Gunn took advantage of the back-wind, and fired a 25 yard effort on target that the City keeper Montieth spilled, but collected at the second attempt.

City have as yet not tested Don with anything.

On the quarter-hour mark Don droped a high cross into the box, but the Academy back-line were quick to clear any danger.

26 minutes and some excellent build-up play by Academy lead to Weir laying-off to Gunn, and his shot flew inches past the upright from 22 yards out.

Academy are currently playing the better football in atrocious conditions of wind and very heavy rain, but City are a big physical side and the feeling is that Academy really need to take advantage of the back wind in the first half, or they may be under the cosh in the second when City get the wind advantage behind them.

With 28 minites played Macadie swings in a corner-kick and Craig Shearer gets his head to it, but puts it just over the top of the cross-bar.

A minute later and City break down the park and Robbie Ross gets his head to a crossed ball, but Don got his body well behind it and makes a safe catch.

In the closing period of the half Macadie smashed a half-volley on target that was cleared. The ball came back out to Weir and his shot was pushed away by a finger-tip save by the City keeper Montieth in what was the closest chance of the half.

Academy pile on the pressure with 4 consecutive corners, but can't make any of them count.

Half Time 0 - 0

The weather conditions have eased a little at the start of the second half, The rain has stopped and the wind is also dropping a little. City now have this in their advantage though, so it could be a tough half for the Scorries.

Academy are continuing to make the better chances with MacKenzie forcing a point-blank save from the City keeper. Macadie also calls him into action warming his fingers again with another good shot.

With 25 minutes played of the second half Nigel MacKenzie capitalises on a slack pass in the City defence and forged up the wing before squaring to Weir in the box, but before Weir could set himself to shoot three City defenders closed him down to deny what should have been an attempt at goal.

City are now coming more into the game and it could be a long final 20 minutes.

Academy attack to the final whistle forcing many corners but they just can't get a clear goal-scoring opportunity, with City defending resolutely accross their back line.

Full Time 0 - 0

So Academy's Scottish Cup run continues amd City have to make their way North to the Harmsworth Park next Saturday for the re-play. If you have nothing planned for next weekend come along to the game as it's likely to be a cracker!
