Match Report

Wick outplayed second placed Nairn with a scintillating display.

The visitors looked strong early on and were rewarded midway through the half when Steven Mackay fired high into the net. Academy were level within a minute when Stevie Cunningham drilled the ball low into the net from near the penalty spot.

Wick took the lead when Cunningham's long cross from the right reached Sam Mackay on the far side and the midfielder cut in to lash the ball in from a tight angle.

Nairn were soon level when Mackay scrambled the ball past Alan Bokas at the foot of the post. Wick had a series of free kicks as Nairn fought desperately to contain a wave Wick of attacks.

Half time 2 - 2

After a few close calls at the Wick end after the break, there was drama in the Nairn box when Wayne Mackintosh tripped Ross Allan and Sam Mackay steered the spot kick low to keeper Callum Donaldson's right.

Wick stretched their lead to 4-2 when Davie Allan drove the ball in low from the right across the face of the goal and the unfortunate Dale Gillespie turned it into his own net.

As Wick continued to carve open the Nairn rearguard, Richard Macadie missed an open goal but made amends when he tapped in a Davie Allan cross. When Conor Gethins swerved a text book 20 yard free kick over the Wick wall in the dying seconds it was too little too late for the visitors to get back in the game.
