Match Report

A break in League action today with 2nd round matches taking place in the Breedons Aggregate Highland League Cup. This is the first time that Academy and Deveronvale have met in the Highland League Cup.

Academy travel to Banff without the services of Craig Shearer, Stewart Ross, Bryan McKiddie and Allan Bokas. Vale have Gordon Carstairs, Ross Mackenzie and Kris Duncan missing, but their biggest loss is likely to be keeper James Blanchard who starts a 3 week trip off-shore.

The home side take the lead with only 3 minutes played. Ross Allan left a back-pass short to Gary Manson and Mike McKenzie intercepted and curled a 20 yard shot over the top of Gray and into the back of the net.

1 - 0

Within 3 minutes Academy are back on level terms with a flowing passing move. Ross Allan laid the ball to Cunningham who switched play from the right to left flank. Richard Macadie drove on and squared the ball to Davie Allan just outside the Vale box. Allan played a one-two with Weir before striking the return pass into the goal via a flick off a defender.

1 - 1

It's an action packed start as Vale take the lead again. A corner is swung into the Academy box and is punched out by Gray. It fell to Graeme Rodger who smacked a great volley into the top right hand corner.

2 - 1

Academy go straight back on the attack from the re-start. Weir sent Ross Allan free into the box and he went one-on-one with keeper Tiat, but Tait took him down and referee Douglas Ross flashed the red card and Tait was sent for an early bath. With no sub keeper on the bench defender Kyle Rae put on the gloves. Sam Mackay took the resulting spot-kick and placed it low into the left side of the net.

2 - 2

Both sides have had further chances to score. McKenzie screwed a shot from the edge of the box wide of the target for the home side and Macadie had an effort that went just over the cross-bar.

Vale then come close again with two great opportunities. McKenzie pushed a short corner to Scott Fraser and he hit a goal-bound shot that was tipped over the top from Gray. 2 minutes later the intersection of the Academy post and cross bar saved the day as McKenzie watched his shot smack off it and was cleared to safety.

7 minutes before the break Academy had a near miss when Ross Allan got the better of his marker up the left flank and crossed into the area. The ball was missed by everyone and eventually found its way to Cunningham on the right side of the box but his shot flashed across goal and just past the outside of the Vale post.

Half Time 2- 2

Academy make a change for the start of the second half with Martin Gunn coming on for Richard Macadie.

Academy score two goals in as many minutes. Mackay played Weir up the left channel and Weir's shot was half blocked by the keeper's legs but span across the line.

2 - 3

Two minutes later stand-in keeper Rae had a poor lock-out that fell to Weir. He played the ball forward to Davie Allan and from just inside the box Allan picked his spot and fired low across the keeper and into the back of the net.

2 - 4

So game over, not a hope! Mike McKenzie set Graeme Watt off on a charge up the left wing and he fired the ball low across the 6 yard line for Chris Blackhall to tap in.

3 - 4

Vale continue to push and send a long ball over the top of the Academy defence. Ross Allan pulls back on Graeme Roger and gets his second yellow of the game, so both sides are now down to 10 men. Mike McKenzie took the resulting free-kick and Gray parried it for a corner. The corner is fired in and Vale hit the bar before the ball is scrambled for another corner kick. This time Academy fail to clear the corner as it came in and is punted into the air Shaun Sinclair misjudged the flight of it allowing Chris Blackhall to volley home for his second of the match.

4 - 4

Deep into stoppage time and sub Jack Meldrum hits the bar.

Full time 4 - 4

Extra time coming up...

Vale have had the bulk of the pressure in the 1st period of extra time and with 8 minutes played they force 3 corners on the spin, the second of which was cleared off the line by Grant Steven.

With a minute of the first extra time period left Davie Allan skipped past his marker but fired into the side netting.

Half time XT 4 - 4

9 mins into the second period of extra time Manson gave the ball away cheaply to Graeme Watt who charged into the box. Grant Steven seemed to slip and it gave Watt the space to step inside and he hammered the ball across the face of Gray into the opposite corner of the net.

5 - 4

Academy almost square the scores when Shaun Sinclair teed Martin Gunn up 25 yards from goal. Gunn riffled a great shot on target but stand-in keeper Rae makes himself a hero as he got two hands to the shot and parried it for a corner.

Full time XT 5 - 4

Vale now face Buckie in the quarter finals after they beat Nairn 2-1 today.
