Academy marched into the semi-final of the North of Scotland Cup tonight with a great 3-1 win away to Clach. Academy go on to face Brora Rangers, who beat Thurso FC 7-1, with that tie taking place at Harmsworth Park on a date yet to be confirmed.
James Pickles got his first competitive start for the Scorries.
Sam Mackay opened the scoring with a cool lob in the 24th minute and Clach went down to 10 men eleven minutes later when Scott Graham was given a straight red card for back-healing Ross Allan in view of the referee's assistant. A quick fire double at the start of the second half secured the win when Geruzel and Mackay netted in the 46th and 47th minutes. The home side did pull a goal back with 64 minutes on the clock when Chris Ross found the net with a 25 yarder, but Clach ended the game with only nine men on the park when Collin Williamson was also given his marching orders in the last minute of play for a tackle from behind on Weir.
Wick started this game on the attack and after 9 minutes cam close to taking the lead, a Macadie long ball was flicked into the path of Davie Allan by a Clach defender but Allan volleyed over from just inside the box.
Academy did take the lead on 25 minutes, Sam Mackay controlled a pass from Gary Manson and he chipped the ball over the head of the advancing keeper before lobbing home.
Sloppy defending from Wick on the half hour mark almost lead to a Clach equalizer but Blair Lawrie could only fire straight at Michael Gray.
A potential game changing situation occurred after 34 minutes when the linesman spotted Scott Graham kicking out at Ross Allan and this resulted in a straight red card for Graham.
Half Time Clachnacuddin 0 - Wick Academy 1
Academy came out at the start of the second half all guns blazing and added two quick goals, the first came from Lukasz Geruzel, a pass from Davie Allan found Geruzel in behind the Clach defence and he showed great composure to slot the ball into the bottom corner.
Just a minute later and it was 3-0 this time it was Sam Mackay who found the net, Sam was played in up the inside left channel and he placed a shot across the keeper into the same corner as Geruzel had done moments earlier.
Clach came back into the game and got a goal after 63 minutes, a long ball was played down the line to Alan Pollock and he layed it back to Lawrie whose cross was headed out by Alan Farquhar to Chris Ross 25 yards from goal who took a touch before firing a shot into the back of the net.
One final chance for Wick came on 77 minutes and this time Weir was played in by Mackay but John Campbell stood up well in the Clach goal and managed to beat away the shot.
One final moment of controversy from a Clach point of view occurred deep into injury time but maybe justified going by current rules, Colin Williamson came in the back of Weir right in front of the ref who had no hesitation in showing a straight red card.
