Academy kick off their Scottish Cup campaign today with a tough away trip to East of Scotland side Spartans. The team travelled as far as Dundee last night, and made the short trip to Ainslie Park this morning.
Manager Davie Kirkwood has the full squad down with him and has made three changes from last weekend with Craig Shearer, Michael Steven and Grant Steven making the starting 11.
20 minutes played and the game is evenly poised. Academy are taking a wee while to get used to the bounce of the ball on the artificial pitch.
Both sides have had long range pops at goal. Richard Macadie had a 20 yard drive deflected for a corner, and Keith Macleod had a 25 yard shot that flashed past the outside of Michael Gray's left hand post.
The game has been stopped for about 5 minutes after a clash of heads between Michael Steven and Alistair MacKinnon. Steven has had a bandage applied around his head whilst MacKinnon had to leave the park and looks as if he is heading for some stitches with a chance of re-appearing.
Academy opened the scoring in the 43rd minute. Sam Mackay had a header from a corner cleared off the line. The ball went ping-pong before falling to Grant Steven and he hammered the ball into the roof of the net from close range.
0 - 1
A minute later the Scorries doubled their lead. Academy broke into the Spartans box and Sam Mackay slid the ball to Lukasz Geruzel and he nodded it into the bottom left hand corner of Chris Flochart's net from 4 yards out
0 - 2
Half Time - Spartans 0 - Wick Academy 2
Alistair MacKinnon has had his head-knock patched up and he returned at the start of the second half, but is dropped to right back.
15 minutes of the second half played and neither side have managed to craft a clear strike at goal.
63 minutes played and Stewart Ross comes on for Lukasz Geruzel who receives a warm send-off from the travelling Academy support.
74 minutes played and Academy had a shout for a penalty when keeper Chris Flockhart looked to have taken down Davie Allan, but referee Gavin Duncan waved away the Academy protests as the ball was cleared for a corner.
Davie Allan almost increases Academy's lead. He cut in from the right and breezed past the Spartan's full back and got a left foot shot on target but keeper Flockhart made a brilliant one handed save and turned the ball past his post.
7 minutes from full time and Alistair MacKinnon is booked for a clear body-check on Davie Allan 25 yards from goal. Richard Macadie took the free kick and it looked goal-bound but keeper Flockhart again came to the rescue with a superb diving save to tip the ball onto the crossbar.
A minute later Spartans have a good chance. Substitute Donal Henretty got a flick on a crossed ball but Michael Gray got down well to his right to catch the ball on the line. Edge of the seat stuff!!
Referee Duncan played out 2 or 3 minutes of extra time before blowing for the end of the game and the Scorries fans begin to party as Academy march into the next round.
