Match Report

Academy travelled south of the border for today's William Hill Scottish Cup 2nd round tie against Berwick Rangers. A large contingent of Wick Academy supporters have travelled to Shiefield Park for the game, and they are making themselves heard by all accounts. Berwick are currently sitting in 6th place in the SFL 3rd division, and recorded a fine 4-1 win last Saturday against Stirling Albion. Academy recorded a similar 4-1 result at home last weekend to Fraserburgh.

Ross Allan has an injury so wasn't available for selection, but other than Allan Richard Hughes has a full squad at his disposal.

It's bright blue skies in Berwick with a slight breeze blowing and the game has just kicked off.

Academy should have taken the lead with only 6 minutes played. Davie Allan broke into the box and was taken down by Devon Jacobs. Referee James Campbell had no hesitation and pointed for a penalty kick. Sam Mackay took the spot kick but keeper Youssef Bejaoui got down well to his left and made the save. Gary Weir followed in to try to get on the end of the re-bound and got a foot on the ball but it deflected for a corner.

15 minutes played and it's still 0-0. The game is evenly poised and Academy are pressing the ball well and are creating chances.
Berwick had a good chance when Fraser McLaren broke the off-side trap and went through one-on-one with Michael Gray. Gray came to meet him and 6 yards out blocked his effort on goal. McLaren got to the re-bound and tried to chip the ball forward to Darren Lavery but it went out of play.

Berwick created another good chance when Darren Lavery played in Lee Currie who had a crack from the corner of the 6 yard box but Gray got down well and saved with his left hand.

In the 24th minute Berwick are forced to make a change. Darren Lavery, who had been at the heart of Berwick's attacking moves, is replaced by John Ferguson.

On the half-hour Berwick are starting to apply some pressure and Dean Hoskins broke down the left flank scorching past Michael Steven and fired a cross right along the 6 yard box that was cleared for a corner. Neil Janczyk got his head to the corner ball and his attempt smacked off the bar.

Berwick are looking dangerous on the break and both full-backs are making good ground up the flanks, but their forwards haven't as yet been able to get onto the end of their crosses.

In the last attack of the first half Academy Sam Mackay got free of his marker and but his 20 yard drive skimmed the top of the Berwick cross-bar.

Half-Time - Berwick Rangers 0 - Wick Academy 0

No changes for either side at the beginning of the second half.

Berwick win a free kick in the Academy half that is cleared and Academy make a break. Gary Weir holds up a long ball before slipping in Sam Mackay , but keeper Bejaoui saved Mackays shot and Berwick cleared their lines.

67 minutes played and both sides make a substitution. Neil Janczyk is replaced for Stuart Noble, and Lukasz Geruzel comes on for Gary Weir.

A great five minute spell of pressure from Academy. Stevie Cunningham played Mackay in on goal but Mackay's fired his shot from 18 yards out straight to keeper Bejaoui.

Davie Allan and Richard Macadie then linked up well and keeper Bejaoui made a great save to deny Macadie as he knocked his shot for a corner. Grant Steven connected with the corner kick and his down-ward header bounced over the top of keeper Bajaoui and flicked off the cross-bar. Edge of the seat stuff!!

It's great football from Academy and we have another great chance. Cunningham played the ball to Geruzel, who back-heeled it back to him. Cunningham drove at goal and keeper Bejaoui again made the block, but to fell to Macadie and he hit his follow-up attempt over the cross-bar.

Both sides make changes. In 79 minutes Cunningham was replaced by James Pickles, and a minute later Kevin McDonald was replaced by Damian Gielty.

It's end to end stuff as both sides look for the winner. 5 minutes from full-time Berwick win a free kick which is swung in by Lee Currie and substitute Damian Gielty got a header on target but Michael Gray made a fantastic save getting down low to keep the score to zero.

Heart-break for the Scorries in the last minute of the game. Substitute Stuart Noble breaks into the box and is taken down by Grant Steven – Penalty, and Steven is booked. Lee Currie took the spot kick and converted.
