Academy were knocked out of the Breedon Highland League Cup today at the hands of visitors Turriff United. Academy had good chances with a Richard Macadie drive smacking off the cross-bar and keeper Kevin Main pulled off a great one-handed save to tip a Steven Anderson effort over the crossbar. Academy also had a fairly good shout for a penalty waved away by referee Graham Fraser when Steven Anderson looked to have been pushed over in the box. The winning goal came from Turriff captain Cameron Bowden in the 53rd minute and they now go onto the next round when they travel away again to face either Deveronvale or Nairn County (their game today was postponed).
Academy had the first sight of goal early on when Andrew Hardwick beat the offside trap to run on to a long ball from halfway. But the central defender fired a weak shot straight at goalkeeper Kevin Main from 18 yards.
Richard Macadie beat Main with a well struck effort from 25 yards but the shot smacked against the crossbar before the ball was punted to safety.
Turriff started to stamp their authority on the game and created a number of decent chances throughout the first half. David Ross had a great chance when the Wick defence failed to clear Neale Davidson's cross. But the forward could get no power on his shot, resulting in a comfortable save for Sean McCarthy.
Leszek Nowosielski also caused trouble when he found space and for a 20 yarder which stung the hands of McCarthy.
Half Time - Wick Academy 0 - Turriff United 0
Minutes into the second half, Academy felt they should have been awarded a penalty when Steven
Anderson appeared to have been pushed by an opponent in the box in a scramble for the ball. But referee Graham Fraser ruled no foul had take place, to the disbelief of the home support.
Academy's frustrations grew when Turriff took the lead from a Nowosielski cross from the left wing into the box. After a messy sequence, Bowden had the final say when he blasted the ball from close range into the back of the net.
0 - 1
Wick almost pulled one back immediately when Anderson caught the Turriff defence unawares to beat the offside trap and run on to Sam Mackay's pass. But his shot from 12 yards was brilliantly saved by Main who tipped the ball over the bar.
Academy continued to press for an equaliser and almost forced extra time at the death when Anderson once again caused problems in the Turriff defence by penetrating the visitors' back line. his shot was heading towards the bottom right corner when it was blocked by Main as Turriff held on to progress to the quarter finals.
