A late winner from Cove Rangers condemned Wick Academy to a disappointing and undeserved defeat on a gloriously sunny afternoon at Harmsworth Park.
A once-again understrength Academy side fought admirably and matched their title-chasing opponents throughout, coming back from a goal down to lead 2-1 at the break thanks to long range strikes from Danny Mackay and Marc MacGregor.
However, a controversial penalty early in the second half switched the momentum back in Cove's favour and a stunning late strike from Blair Yule secured a vital three points for the Aberdeenshire side.
With Sean McCarthy unavailable, his younger brother Danny started only his fifth match for the club between the sticks.
Steven Anderson returned from suspension, although Sam Mackay was forced to sit out while serving one of his own and MacGregor replaced Gary Weir up front, while a familiar face lined up in midfield for the visitors through former Academy player Grant Campbell.
As expected, the visitors made a strong start winning a number of early corners which the Academy defence repelled, albeit somewhat unconvincingly.
!n the 27th minute Cove took the lead when Yule whipped in a corner. Danny McCarthy rose to claim it but collided with Michael Steven and the ball fell to the feet of Eric Watson who blasted in from close range.
0 - 1
The lead lasted barely a minute, however, when Danny Mackay played a neat one-two with Richard Macadie out wide on the left. Mackay found himself in space and and hit an audacious, spectacular first-time effort from 35 yards which soared over the head of Cove goalkeeper Stuart Mckenzie and into the top corner of the net.
1 - 1
Ten minutes before half-time Mitch Megginson squared the ball for Paul McManus who looked certain to score, only for McCarthy to pull off a stunning instinctive save with his legs.
Some solid defending and terrific midfield battling from Academy was justly rewarded with a half-time lead when Steven Anderson drove forcefully through the middle and Macadie laid the ball off for MacGregor who drilled a low effort into the bottom corner from just outside the box.
