Wick exited the NOS Cup after the first round for the second year running - Academy started brightly with a Richard Macadie shot from outside the 18 yard box after 6 minutes that flew just over the bar then, with 20 minutes in, Mark Macgregor slipped a thru pass to Steven Anderson on the edge of the box but his shot went wide of the post. Despite a few heavy tackles earlier in the game referee Billy Baxter produced his first yellow card of the night when Danny Mackay was adjudged to have gone through Invergordon's Michael Mackenzie in an attempt to reach the ball.
On 26 minutes Invergordon's Kyle Maclean found space on the edge of the 6 yard box and unleashed a shot towards the Wick goal which whistled past the outside of Sean McCarthy's post. Much of the rest of the first half was battled out in midfield with Sam Mackay ‘s couple of deflected shots on the Invergordon goal the highlights for Wick and two yellow cards picked up by Ryan Maclean and Kyle Maclean the lowlights for Invergordon.
Academy soaked up some early Invergordon pressure in the second half and then slowly started to dominate. The two best chances of a goal for Wick came after 58 minutes when the ball fell to Grant Steven on the edge of the 6 yard box but at full stretch he was unable to get his toe to the ball to poke it past Invergordon keeper John Allan and, five minutes later, when Steven Anderson picked up the ball on the right wing cut inside and unleashed a shot that had John Allan scrambling to push away for a corner.
Despite a flurry of pressure in the last 15 minutes Academy could not find the final touch and at Billy Baxter's final whistle both teams prepared for the penalty shoot out.
The first four spot-kicks from each side were all converted before Jack Henry's fifth effort for Wick was saved by John Allan.
This left Michael Mackenzie with the chance to win it and his low shot went underneath the diving Sean McCarthy to set up a quarter final tie against Golspie
