Academy manager Tom McKenna felt his side did not deserve to leave empty-handed from their trip to Mosset Park on Wednesday night. The Scorries led through a Gordie MacNab strike but the hosts had restored parity by the interval and converted one of two penalties they were awarded in the second period to complete a Highland League double over the Scorries.
McKenna said: “We are obviously disappointed and feel a draw would have been a fair result. But the lads can come away with a lot of pride in the way they played. Time after time we have competed well against the top teams and are not far away from them.”
He felt Forres dominated the first half but Academy were the better team in the second half.
“I was very impressed with Forres passing game and the tempo they played at but our lads deserve a lot of credit for the way they performed and defended. That’s also part of the game. We had chances to equalise but it was not to be,” said McKenna.
It all started well for Academy who took the lead in 28 minutes after creating some earlier opportunities.
They were unlucky not to take the lead in 16 minutes when a Michael Steven header from 10 yards hit the top of the crossbar. A few minutes later, the home side had a chance but Allan MacPhee fired wide from a tight angle.
Just before the half-hour mark, the Scorries found the net when MacNab fired home a well-struck shot from 14 yards.
In the 35th minute Sam Mackay came close to extending the visitors lead when he curled a free kick from 25 yards just over the bar.
Shortly afterwards, Forres equalised when Andy MacRae hit a shot from outside the box. It took a slight deflection which deceived keeper Sean McCarthy and flew into the net.
The home side created some other chances as they piled on the pressure. MacPhee had another effort while a Jordan Milne shot was cleared off the line by Brandon Sinclair.
Forres had a chance five minutes before half time when a Craig McGovern free kick from 20 yards was gathered at the second attempt by McCarthy.
On the hour mark, Forres went ahead when they were awarded what the away fans thought was a soft penalty which was tucked away by Allan Pollock.
Academy kept pressing for an equaliser and on 68 minutes Steven Anderson cut in from the left but his shot was deflected for a corner.
Forres were awarded a second penalty in the 71st minute but Pollock failed to convert it.
Right at the end Academy had a chance to equalise when sub Jack Halliday played in Steven Anderson from just inside the box but he fired over.
