Match Report

Devernovale pulled off a bigger day-light robbery than the mid-week £50m Securitas heist by beating Academy by a single goal with their one and only serious scoring attempt of the game.

Deveronvale kicked off playing down the Academy slope and both teams really cancelled each other out for the first 15 mins or so of the game.

Vales Ross McWilliam had a weak attempt at goal in the 13th minute that Don saved comfortably.

Academys first chance of the game came in the 17th minute when Vale conceded a corner. Davie Cowie whipped in the corner and Andrew Macleod jumped out of his skin high above the defence to power in a strong header, but keeper Blanchard saved.

Vale then created 2 half chances. In the 19th minute Kenny Gilbert put a long range free-kick high over Dons bar, and in the 21st minute Robert Brown headed wide of Dons post after a good run and cross from Ross McWilliam.

Academy then had a great chance on the half-hour when Gavin Henderson drove forward with the ball and un-leashed a great shot from 30 yards out that keeper Blanchard got finger-tips to and tipped around his left hand post.

Deveronvales best chance of the half came in 45 minutes when Steven Dolan whipped in a corner that fell to Jamie Watt, but he skied his shot over the bar from only 6 yards out.

Half time 0 -0

Vale started the second half quite sharply and within the 3rd minute created a chance when Steven Dolan had a run up the right wing and fired in a dangerous cross that Don collected and hung onto well.

Academy then thought they had scored in the 51st minute. A Gary Farquhar free kick was whipped into the Devernovale box and it went to the far post. Andrew Macleod didn’t give up on it and just managed to stretch a foot to it and cross it back across goal for (correction) Craig Shearer to head home. Unfortunately the linesman had flagged for the ball being just out of play.

Academy had a half-shout for a penalty in the 58th minute when Gary Farquhar was hustled down in the Vale box, but referee Fraser was having none of it, which in fairness was probably the correct decision.

On the hour there was a real scramble in the Academy box. The ball was played into the box by Bryan Dlugonski and it bounced and bobbled about for what seems to be an age before Andrew Macleod cleared for a throw-in.

In the 61st minute Vale made a sub with Ian Murray coming on for Michael Mackenzie.

Vale then took the lead in the 70th minute with their only real threat on goal in the whole game. Gavin Henderson gave away a free-kick with quite a bad foul about 30 yards from the Academy goal. The Vale super-sub Ian Murray took the free kick and sent it over the wall and high into the net past Dons outstretched hand.

0 – 1

Both teams made substitutes in the last 20 mins of the game to try and change things around. In the 71st min Gary Farquhar was replaced for Gary Weir, in the 79th minute Shaun Sinclair came off for Sandy Sutherland. Vale’s changes were McWilliam off for Watt in the 85th minute, and Craib on for Urquhart in the 91st minute.

None of the substitutions changed the end result of the game, and referee Fraser blew for full time with Vales lead intact.

Full time 0 - 1

So an entertaining game that Vale as league leaders really struggled to win. Academy were good value for the punters money today, and gave them a real hard game. Academys back 4 looked really sound today, with Gavin Henderson deserving his nomination as man of the match.

A draw would have probably been a fairer outcome, but Vales single serious attemptgoal earn them all 3 points thus sustaining their challenge for the league championship. Academy on the other hand drop a place to 12th in the league, over-taken by Lossiemouth who beat Brora 5 -2 today. Rothes also draw level on points with Academy with their 3 -1 win over Fort William, but Academy have a better goal difference.
