Match Report

Gregg Carrol took last seasons league champions to Wick today for a top of the table clash with Academy. In the corresponding game last season Deveronvale stole all 3 points with a 70th minute free-kick, which was their only attempt on goal in that particular game. Deveronvales performance this time round however was more convincing, running out 3 – 0 winners.

Unfortunately for Academy Daniel Bell injured his hand in the warm-up, so he was replaced by Kevin McGee.

Academy started the game very well, and had their first chance within the 3rd minute. Richard Mcadie stormed his way through the middle of the Vale defence, played a neat 1-2 with Martin Gunn, but unfortunately couldn’t finish things off under pressure from a good tackle from Vales last defender.

Then 5 minutes later Academy had another half chance. This time Martin Gunn struck a great volley from the edge of the Vale penalty area, but it whistled wide of Blanchards goal.

Deveronvales first chance of the game came in the 12th minute. Michael Ewan worked his way into a good shooting position, but he fired his attempt high over McGees cross-bar.

Deveronvale then scored the opener in the 28th minute. It started with McGee coming off his line to try to collect a ball that was pumped into the heart of the Academy defence. Vales Ross McWilliam beat him to the ball and sent a chipped attempt goal-bound, but Andrew MacLeod cleared it off the line for a corner kick. Kenny Gilbert took the resulting corner and fired the ball into the Academy box. After a few ricochets Michael Ewan managed to connect with the ball, and he steered it low into the Academy net from only a few yards out.

0 – 1

Deveronvale then started to control the game, and started to play some really good possession football. They scored their second 3 minutes before half-time when a high ball into the Academy box bounced over the head of Graeme Reid, and Ewan was on hand to score his second of the game, with a low drive from 15 yards out that ended in the bottom left hand corner of the Academy goal.

0 - 2

Half Time 0 – 2

Peter made a change at half-time with Gary Farquhar coming off for Gary Weir.

The first chance of the second half came in the 63rd minute. Stewart Ross gave the ball away in his own half, and Vales number 4 Fraser Bremner drove up the field before whipping in a good cross that Michael McKenzie fired just wide of goal.

That was followed by Michael Ewan having a decent attempt at his hat-trick, attempting an acrobatic over-head kick that went just high over the Academy cross-bar.

Deveronvale were really starting to click by this stage, and Ewan should have scored his 3rd when he missed a sitter from 2 yards out following a good crossed ball by Ross McWilliam.

Vale continued to press and in the 75th minute Gary Manson gave away a free-kick wide on the right about 35 yards from the Academy goal. Michael McKenzie took the free-kick and sent a right foot pile-driver towards the Academy goal, but the ball bent out wide of McGees right hand post.

Deveronvale sealed the game in the 82nd minute. Kenny Gilbert fired in a powerful shot which David Mowat stuck a foot out to defend, only to see the ball fly into the Academy net for an unfortunate own-goal.

0 – 3

Full Time 0 – 3

So Vale march on and Academy must now try to pick themselves up for Monday nights cup game against Ross County. Academy competed very well in this game for the first 20 minutes or so, but to be honest once Deveronvale found their full stride they were the better team. Academy must not be too disheartened with todays result, as Deveronvale showed signs that they appear to have a squad that have the potential of lifting yet another league title.
