Gordon Macnab’s equaliser 14 minutes from time rescued a point for Wick Academy at Keith on Wednesday night. The trialist, who was brought on as a first half sub, made the vital breakthrough after the Scorries were given a tough time during their midweek venture to Moray.
It is not known if the Staxigoe United and Halkirk United striker will be signing a permanent deal at Harmsworth Park, but manager Tom McKenna is keen to introduce an open door policy to county players.
“With the geography of our team, we can only work with what we have available in our area,” he said.
“But there are a lot of football players in Caithness who are good enough to make the step up.
“I would like to invite them to trial with us – anyone who has the right attitude and application is more than welcome to come speak to me.
“The football club represents the county and I would welcome any players to join us if they think they are good enough.”
Despite the 170-mile journey to Kynoch Park, Academy were able to field a strong team, with only regulars Grant Steven and Michael Steven missing in defence.
Steven Anderson had a good chance to give Wick an early lead when he unleashed a 20-yard shot which Keith goalkeeper Lewis Milne fumbled but he managed to gather at the second attempt.
Keith dominated the first half and went very close when striker Cammy Keith’s 12-yard shot clattered off the left post.
Trialist Macnab was brought on 10 minutes before half-time after injury cut short Marc Macgregor’s involvement and soon after Academy found themselves behind. Mitchell Foy beat the offside trap and ran through unopposed to fire past Sean McCarthy.
The goalkeeper prevented Wick from going into the break facing a two goal deficit when he pulled off an impressive save to deny Ryan Whelan.
Keith started off the second half brightly with McCarthy doing well with a couple of saves to deny the hosts going 2-0 up.
Sam Mackay came on as a substitute midway through the second half and almost made an instant impact with an impressive 25-yard free kick which smacked off the crossbar.
He then helped Academy get back into the game with a defence-splitting pass which left Macnab one-on-one with Milne and he slotted the ball past the keeper.
Academy face a tough challenge at Harmsworth Park tomorrow when they face title-chasing Fraserburgh, who are level on points with Cove Rangers at the top of the league.
