Wick looked sharp from the off and could have been ahead in the first minute when Sam Mackay rose high to get his head to a cross from the left by Gary Manson - the goal bound header was pushed away by a good diving save from Strathspey keeper Ryan Macleod - Michael Steven was first to the loose ball but his shot finished inches past the right post.
Jags keeper Macleod was called into action 2 minutes later - a through ball from Richard Macadie to Davie Allan, Allan beat Duncan Davidson for pace and unleashed a shot from the edge of the 6 yard box. Macleod was equal to it and blocked the ball with his feet - the ball flying past the far post for a corner.
Strathspey had their first chance a few minutes later when James Fraser layed the ball off to John Cameron who turned into space but unfortunately for the Jags he pulled his shot wide to the left and it rolled out for a goal kick to Wick.
Although Academy pressed forward they couldn't break down the Strathspey defence and in the 20th minute the Jags broke forward and James Fraser released a shot from the edge of the 18 yard box which flew past Sean McCarthy in the Wick goal to give Strathspey the lead.
Academy kept pressing forward - Marc Macgregor had a shot from outside the 18 yard box well blocked by Macleod - A Davie Allan run was eventually halted on the edge of the penalty box when Duncan Davidson first attempted to pull the Wick man back, then attempted to trip him up and, eventually, stretched in from behind to upend him just a yard shot of the penalty box. After a wee stramache between the players as to where the foul took place Sam Mackay took the free kick but it sailed over the cross bar.
Davie Allan was finding his running game and after a strong run down the right his ball across the 6 yard line was cut out by a Strathspey defender just before Mark Macgregor could run on to it. Ryan Macleod had another good save for the Jags - this time collecting a cross from Alan Farquhar under considerable pressure from Grant Steven. Wick's final attack of the first half again came down the right - Jack Halliday running down the wing and crossing into the box but Davie Allan's shot was blocked by a combination of Duncan Davidson and Lee Wilson for Strathspey.
1 nil to the home team at half time
Into the second half and Wick were level within 30 seconds - a long ball by Davie Allan found Richard Macadie unmarked in the centre of the 6 yard box and he coolly slotted the ball to the right of Strathspey keeper Macleod.
Michael Steven nearly gave Wick the lead 5 minutes later when he drove forward from midway through the Strathspey half, unleashed a shot from just inside the 18 yard that looked destined for the top corner before being blocked at the last minute by Jags James McShane.
20 minutes in and Wick finally got the goal they had been searching for - Jack Halliday beat James McShane to Davie Allan's through ball and his right foot shot back across the keeper found the back of the net.
A minute later it was 3 - 1 - Sam Mackay drove to the byline, cut the ball back for Davie Allan who fired the ball home at the second attempt after keeper MacLeod had saved his first effort.
Grant Steven was lucky not to give away a penalty in the 73rd minute when he pulled back James Fraser inches away from the right corner of the 18 yard box as the Strathspey keeper was driving towards goal.
Strathspey were fighting hard to get back into the match - Alan Farquhar had to block a shot from James Fraser - Sean McCarthy was at full stretch to tip a shot just around his near post - but were caught on the break when Jack Halliday played a one two with Richard Macadie, layed the ball off to Marc Macregor and the Wick forward placed his right foot shot wide of the keeper to make it 4 - 1 to the visitors.
Just as it looked as it was all over Strathspey were awarded a penalty after Alan Farquhar was adjudged to have brought down a Jags defender as he slid in to knock the ball out for a corner. John Cameron stepped up to take the penalty but Sean McCarthy stopped the shot diving low to his left.
There was still time for another goal for Wick when an Alan Hughes cross was knocked back across goal to Gordy MacNab who tapped in the ball from close range.
Final Score - Strathspey 1 v Wick 5 - Brora up next in the second round.
