Match Report

A poor crowd today at Grant Park witnessed a great game of football that produced six goals.

Both teams started brightly and it only took 3 minutes for the first goal to come. Martin Gunn played a ball that split open the Lossiemouth defence, and Nigel Mackenzie ran through to slot home a good goal past Lossie keeper Stevie Dunn.

0 - 1

2 minutes later a high ball was sent into the Academy half and it took a high bounce on the semi-frozen ground to go over the head of Andrew Macleod. The Lossie number 10 ran through picking the ball up but he scuffed his shot and Don made an easy save.

Lossie equalised in the 8th minute when Lossie striker Martin McMullen latched onto a ball again played high over the Academy defence. He controlled it well and hammered it home from about 10 yards out.

1 - 1

Lossie then went on to score their second in the 19th minute when the ball was crossed into the Academy box and Graeme Kennedy got a free header at Dons back post to score from 5 yards out.

2 - 1

Wick responded 2 minutes later when Davie Cowie whipped in a good cross and Nigel Mackenzie got up at the back post but he headed wide.

Shortly after that Martin Gunn had a minor tangle with a Lossie player and referee Mackay saw fit to book him for it. It certainly didn’t merit a yellow card, and everyone, including the Lossie supporters and management team seemed bemused by the decision.

The action continued fast and furious with Academy having further good chances from Nigel in 24 minute shooting high, and Andrew Macleod in 26 minutes forcing a good low save from Lossie keeper Dunn.

This was followed by a goal-mouth scramble that saw the ball being cleared off the line by the last Lossiemouth defender.

Academy kept creating chances and played some good attacking football with Gary Farquhar just failing to put the teams in at half time level when he had a run through the middle of the Lossie defence, made some space for himself, and cracked a 30 yard whistler off the Lossie cross-bar.

Half time 2 – 1

The second half continued in the same fashion, with Academy having a goal dis-allowed for off-side, and that was followed a minute later with Martin Gunn firing just past the Lossie right hand post.

Academy finally turned their pressure into a goal when in the 56th minute when Shaun Sinclair sent in a long free kick that everyone seemed to miss, and Andrew Macleod fired in from close range low under keeper Dunn.

2 – 2

Wick then took the lead in the 65th minute when Martin Gunn threaded a pass through the middle of the Lossie defence. Mark Nichol took it in his stride and marched through the Lossie defence. He was pushed slightly wide and it looked as if he’d missed a chance to shoot for goal, but he composed himself well and slotted home past Dunns right hand.

2 - 3

In the 67th minute Alistair made his first change with Murray Coghill coming on for Shaun Sinclair.

Academy kept hunting for the goal that may have sealed the game, and their next chance came in the 68th minute when Martin Gunn had a 18 yard crack at goal that keeper Dunn tipped round the post for a corner.

Lossie then levelled the game again in the 80th minute when another long ball pierced the Academy defence and Joe Lasley ran through un-challenged to score from close range.

3 - 3

Alistair made his last two changes with Graeme Reid coming off for Gavin Henderson in the 81st minute and Gary Farquhar coming off for Paul McCallum in the 87th minute.

Referee Mackay then continued in his customary picky manner in the 89th minute when he booked Martin Gunn for the second time for what seemed another nothing incident. That saw Martin off with a red card.

The game ended at a frantic pace and both teams had opportunities to take all 3 points, Lossies with probably the better chance when Andrew Macleod cleared off his line as the last defender in the final minute of the game.

Final score 3 - 3

This was a very entertaining game with both teams playing open attacking football. Academy shaded the second half but again paid the price today for some poor defending and soft goals. It’s encouraging that they continue to play good football and are creating and scoring goals, so if they could cut out the mistakes at the back they will hopefully have a good run-in for the final half of the season.
